Experiments with Sexual Energy Meditation- Initial Results and Insights

What happens when you meditate on your awareness-level connection with other beings?

What happens when you infuse that awareness with sexual arousal?

This April, I adapted an experiment I read about in Dr Michael Gerber’s book, “Vibrational Medicine," in which “experienced meditators” induced over a 1000% increase in the growth rate of plants through meditation.

I was fascinated by the use of plants as placebo effect resistant subjects. So I set out to see if multiple people, meditation amateurs, could produce similar results. ie, would the power of more people make up for their lack of expertise? Unfortunately, I didn’t recruit much help. But, persisting with the experiment through sheer curiosity, I found surprising insights to a different question. One that has enriched my life in remarkable ways.

For three weeks, I meditated for approximately 1 minute a day on one tray of plants for three weeks. I noted initial faster growth for the tray of 144 sunflower sprouts that received meditation compared to a control tray (see data below).

Interestingly, at the final measurement, the control tray produced higher total growth. I was perplexed. First of all, I was surprised that there was a difference between the two trays at all. Secondly, I was confused why the initial findings of higher growth for the meditation recipients didn’t stay consistent throughout. After investigating further, I found significantly less healthy plants and less upright (vertical) growth among the non-meditation control. As though the plants that missed out on the “nourishing'“ effects of the meditation compensated by growing more, but they could not support that additional growth in a healthy way.

I was fascinated and encouraged by the indication that what seemed like very small doses of meditation could yield measurable effects.

My failure to recruit more people had a silver lining, I found results that, if verified, would help more people overcome the reluctance to begin a meditation practice because the “barrier to entry” was much lower than is commonly expected. Meaning, people who are daunted by the idea of meditating for 20 or even 10 minutes per day can now meditate in much smaller durations and still benefit.

Eager to explore more, I decided to conduct a new experiment. Because I had recently started a personal practice of using sexual energy as a focal point of meditation, I was curious to see if that particular flavor of meditation technique brought with it any measurable advantage in terms of improved health and awareness capacity. If so, this would give loose corroboration to the claims that “sexual energy magnifies your creative and vital power” professed by the neo-Tantric and neo-Taoist teachers who first exposed me to the concept of sexual energy work.

Here are the results:

5 trays planted with 144 seeds each (see more comprehensive methodology below)

7 days later: 3 trays with uncontaminated* results

Tray 1- Received ~6 minutes of simple meditation**

  • Total Germination- 97 seedlings (67%)

  • Total Growth: 102.82 inches

  • Average Height: 1.06 inches

Tray 2- Received ~6 minutes of sex energy meditation***

  • Total Germination: 120 seedlings (83%) ~24% higher than simple meditation

  • Total Growth: 151.85 inches  ~48% higher than simple meditation

  • Average Height: 1.27 inches ~20% higher than simple meditation

Tray 3- Received ~1 minutes of sex energy meditation

  • Total Germination- 122 seedlings (85%) ~26% higher than simple meditation

  • Total Growth: 157.57 inches  ~53% higher than simple meditation

  • Average Height: 1.29 inches  ~22% higher than simple meditation

***Sex Energy Meditation follows the same format as the simple meditation with one crucial exception, I spent from 1- 20 minutes internally stimulating sexual arousal (no external touch) through breath, PC contraction, and circulation of pleasurable energy throughout my body. From that state of heightened arousal I began the same "simple meditation" as defined below.

Learnings:

  1. Never assume old soil will perform the same as new soil.

  2. The presence of aroused sexual energy during meditation seems to affect the growth rate of plants more than meditation alone.

While these results are very preliminary, and surely merit replication attempts, it is promising from a statistical analysis perspective that both trays that received sex energy meditation have very similar results that are consistently distinct from the simple meditation.

  3. Why is the lesser amount of meditation amount slightly better? One reason could simply be luck of the draw with the seeds and only replication will determine if the difference is statistically significant.

An alternative explanation through analogy, is that meditation is akin to looking at a map. You get a great picture of where you are and where want to be. And the mini meditations I was performing for the lower volume tray were like looking at a compass throughout the adventure.

Both are beneficial, but perhaps the more frequent checking in with the compass throughout the day is slightly more beneficial than studying the map intensely at the beginning or end of the day's travels.

Of course, this begs the question, would the combined effects of both studying the map and frequent "compass checks" lead to incrementally better results or perhaps would they be even greater than the sum of the parts? Sounds like a worthy question for a second trial, right?

Some notes on methodology:

  • All trays were planted with wheat from the same source; 2 seeds per cell

  • All seeds were soaked for 24 hours prior to planting

  • All trays were placed immediately adjacent to each other and exposed to the same ambient environmental conditions on an east facing screened porch on September 6th in Rockingham, VT

  • Each tray was rotated every day to normalize light exposure as much as possible

  • I used the same soil for all trays with the noted exception above.

  • All trays were watered an equal amount. 12 seconds per tray on two separate waterings plus an hour of light rain

  • Data collection for germination happened on day 4, 5 and 7

  • Data collection for growth happened on day day 8

  • Meditation was conducted by me. I spaced ~1 Minute of meditation out over 7 days for tray 2, and ~6 minutes of meditation for tray 1 and 3. I measured duration by noting number of breath cycles. Meditation occurred at varying times of day.

Big Picture:

Why does any of this matter? Great question. It matters for me because. it is encouraging to see a demonstration that sexual energy work is a valuable supplement to meditation practice.

Reich Meme.jpg

It could also lend credence to the theories of (unfairly) discredited scientist Wilhelm Reich who based his therapies on the model that psychological dysfunction is largely rooted in the repression of sexual drives and that the free flowing of sexual energy is health promoting, both psychologically and physically. And in fact, that the distinction between the physical and psychological realms should be completely reconsidered.

Following that, it may serve to validate Reich’s measurement of biological energy (aka life force, orgone, chi etc) and therefore calls into question the presumption within the dominant medical-scientific paradigm of mind-body (and person-person) separateness and mechanistic determinism, and encourages instead, a new model which affirms life’s interconnection energetically and through awareness, to whatever unknown extent awareness and energy are different.

But who cares about some eccentric scientist who died in prison 60 years ago? To be honest, that “big picture” talk is small potatoes. What matters is that YOU can learn to harness this energy very simply, and it will have dramatic effects on your life: your health, your relationships, your communication, your emotions, you name it. It did for me.

What I see in these sprouts, and this data, is a confirmation of what I’ve felt in the last several months. That combining sexual energy with meditation wakes you up on every level AND IT TAKES WAY LESS THAN YOU CAN IMAGINE TO HAVE AN EFFECT!

Sorry for yelling. I can’t play down my excitement because this awareness has been transformative for me. It has helped me reach goals in weeks that had previously taken years.

*The two "contaminated" trays were a control tray that received no meditation and a tray that received 1 minute of "simple" meditation. They were contaminated by foolishness on my part. All the soil was gathered from the same source. However, these two unusable trays were gathered over a week earlier than the rest and used for a previous experiment. In a lazy effort to save a little time, I reused that soil, which not only had been exposed to the unacceptable variable of the previous experiment, but even worse had two days of drying out prior to the start of this experiment. I assumed the total saturation of all trays would "level the playing field." But... I regret that decision. Clearly alot can happen to microbial soil life if left dry for even as short as two days. The stark difference in germination rate (53%) indicates that this was a really poor decision on my part.

**Simple Meditation is defined as becoming aware of my awareness. Then becoming aware of the shared awareness between me and the plants ie my awareness based connection to them. Then I spent a few breaths becoming aware of the aliveness, love and kindness inherent in that connection. This is different than just "sending" them vibes, instead it is intended to "take for granted" that the connection between us, and the love/aliveness shared amongst us is already present and that I am just nourishing it with conscious awareness.
